Hong Kong
Travel Guide

Hong Kong was once my home as well for two years! It will always have a place in my heart. What I love about hong kong is the food, hikes and night life.

Destinations

Best time to visit

I recommend going between October to December where the weather is mild and dry. The air is less humid and is great for sightseeing and outdoor activities. I would avoid during the simmer months June to September when it can be hot, humid and expected typhoons.

Know before you go

Language: Cantonese

Currency: Hong Kong Dollars (HKD)

Cash and Card:

Yes, Hong Kong accepts both cash and credit/debit cards. Credit and debit cards, especially Visa and Mastercard, are widely accepted in most shops, restaurants, hotels, and major establishments.

However, for smaller purchases, in local markets, or at some smaller vendors, cash (Hong Kong Dollar, HKD) is often preferred. It’s also a good idea to carry some cash for public transportation like buses or small shops that may not accept cards.

Octopus cards are also commonly used for public transport (MTR, buses, ferries) and can be recharged with cash or credit cards.

Tipping:

In Hong Kong, tipping is not mandatory, but it is appreciated for good service. Here’s a general guide:

  • Restaurants: Many restaurants include a 10% service charge in the bill, especially in mid-range to upscale establishments. If the service charge is included, tipping is not necessary, though rounding up the bill or leaving small change is appreciated. If no service charge is included, a tip of 5-10% is common.
  • Taxis: Tipping taxi drivers is not expected, but rounding up the fare to the nearest dollar is a kind gesture.
  • Hotels: It’s customary to tip hotel staff, such as porters, around HKD 10-20 per bag, and housekeeping staff HKD 20-50 per day. However, this is entirely optional.
  • Spa/Salons: A tip of around 10% is appreciated for good service.

While tipping is not obligatory, it is a nice way to show appreciation for exceptional service.

Safety

Hong Kong is generally considered a safe destination for travelers. The city has a very low crime rate, especially in comparison to other major global cities. Violent crime is rare, and petty crimes such as pickpocketing are not widespread, though it’s still wise to stay vigilant in crowded areas..
